Workshop - Saturday October 3rd

Frogs and Reptiles Macro Workshop with Studio Flash!

Join us for a weekend of amazing shooting! We will be shooting approximately 40 different species of tree frogs, dart frogs, chameleons, rare and bizarre geckos, and even a few insects and arachnids! A few highlights include RedEye Tree frogs, Tiger Leg monkey frogs, Blue Dart frogs, tiny “thumbnail” Dart frogs, highly textured Vietnamese Mossy frogs, colorful Panther chameleons, and many more. Got a “bucket list” animal you’ve always wanted to shoot? Let me know, I may be able to make arrangements to have one available. You would have to travel the world to find all these animals, and even then you would be lucky to get one shot as nice as the many great shots you’ll get while shooting with our studio strobes!

That’s right, we’ll be using studio strobes, so this will make it so much easier to get amazing shots! Once you have the basics down you will get perfect exposures every time, without shadows and blacked out backgrounds. While many of the creatures we will be shooting are larger and fall outside the true definition of macro, there will be plenty of tiny creatures that will challenge your ability to get up close and capture amazing details! A full compliment of amazing tropical foliage and flowers will be used to accent your shots.

Your guide and instructor for the weekend will be me, Patrick Nabors. I’ve been shooting for almost twenty years, and my specialty is macro and nature photography. I’ve presented at multiple photo clubs and regularly lead smaller macro workshops. Instruction will be tailored to each individual, so don’t be intimidated if you feel this might be out of your depth, I’ll have you capturing great images by 10:30 on the first morning! I keep and breed the animals we’ll be photographing, and have a deep knowledge of their natural history and the environment that they come from.

These workshops are always fun, and everyone leaves with amazing images!!

Attendance is limited to eight participants and we will have three sets for shooting.

Gear Needed

DSLR or other camera with hot shoe

A dedicated Macro lens, or other methods for getting close to the subject, such as extension tubes. Please feel free to discuss this with me, I’ll be happy to make sure you arrive at the workshop with the gear you need. In addition if you are a Nikon shooter I may be able to loan you gear.

Tripod is not generally useful for this method of macro shooting. However I find that with the very smallest of subjects, the use of a monopod makes controlling depth of field easier. For anyone interested I’ll be happy to explore the use of a monopod for macro.

Ring flashes and other flashes are generally not needed, but feel free to bring any gear like this, who knows what creative experiments might result! Various reflectors will be available at each station for modifying the flash.

Of course a laptop for reviewing your images is always a great idea!

Workshop Description, Additional Details

Workshop will be held in a large hotel conference room. Three station will be available through both days with a studio strobe setup. Each shooter will have a camera mounted radio trigger that will fire any of the flashes. Each station will be numbered and you can adjust your trigger to fire the station you are shooting at.

Each station will be setup with bromeliads, foliage plants and or flowers, among other decorative props. Out of focus backgrounds will be in place behind the props to give a pleasing overall appearance.

In addition to the standard setups we will also work with some aquatic setups to capture reflections, as well as using a rain setup for some creative shots!
